A new definition of public space in Ostrów Wielkopolski

The Concept of the 'Third Place'

The project for the new branch of the Stefan Rowiński Public Library in Ostrów Wielkopolski is a unique venture that completely redefines traditional thinking about reading and literacy. The main objective of the investment was the comprehensive adaptation of an old, two-storey building with a total floor area of 530 square metres, completely transforming the use of its interiors. Architects from the CUNS architects studio created a space based on the sociological concept of the 'third place' – an open public zone outside of the home and the workplace, which serves as a hub for relaxation, integration, and the free pursuit of passions by residents of all ages.

Multifunctionality Embedded in Architecture

The greatest design challenge was the seamless merging of many diverse socio-cultural functions into a single, cohesive, and consistent whole. The facility features dedicated zones for active engagement with seniors, teenagers, and children, a modern computer lab, a board games area, and a unique vinyl record listening room. Such a broad functional programme required flexible solutions that allow for the seamless organisation of author meetings, culinary workshops, exhibitions, or concerts. This transformation aimed not only to modernise the facility but, above all, to build a new identity for the place and recapture the attention of a wide audience.

Modular Contract Furniture in Action

The foundation of the interior design, which boasts a relaxed, creative atmosphere, consists of curated furniture systems from Balma and its partner brands: NOTI, Bejot, and Profim. A key role was played by Balma's Stepps modular shelving system, which was used to create unique, bespoke installations: long book displays that do not obstruct the interior view, and functional islands integrated with Stepps standing desks. The space was complemented by ergonomic H2, Simplic, and Plus tables. In the relaxation and soft seating zones, the focus was on absolute comfort and mobility, utilising Shieldon armchairs and Bouli pouffes (NOTI), Hens chairs and the iconic Social Swing (Bejot), alongside Chic Lounge armchairs (Profim).

Eco-Conscious Design and Efficient Logistics

The interiors gained a modern yet cosy character thanks to a muted, light colour palette based on white, beige, and black, punctuated by the texture of panels imitating natural plywood. Great importance was attached to ecological aspects and the durability of materials – most of the upholstered furniture was finished in the modern Cura fabric, which is made of 98% recycled materials. Thanks to excellent coordination and precise planning, the efficient installation of such a diverse range of furnishings across an area of over 500 square metres took the installation team just a single week. The result is a vibrant local community hub that impresses with both its aesthetics and functionality.
