"Skills create opportunities. Strength lies in diversity"—this was the core message of the conference "Neurodiversity in the Labor Market and Lifelong Education," which took place on September 24th in Gorzów Wielkopolski.
The event brought together representatives from education, government, healthcare, business, and NGOs, all of whom are committed to supporting individuals with diverse needs.
“We are delighted to have been part of such an important social initiative aimed at 'building bridges.' By raising awareness and understanding the functioning of neurodiverse individuals, we can design and produce furniture tailored to diverse user needs,” said Michał Balcerkiewicz, CEO of Balma. He added, “At the conference, we showcased only a small part of our solutions. I would like to thank Ms. Katarzyna Zakrzewska for her dedication and professionalism in presenting our furniture as well.”
Participants had the opportunity to view and test Balma's inclusive products, including:
Katarzyna Zakrzewska, interior designer and Design Thinking facilitator at ZAKK Studio, emphasized the importance of addressing four key areas of workplace wellbeing during her presentation and in her curated showroom. She highlighted issues related to acoustics, the benefits of mobile spaces and movement (including rocking), and the impact of touch and color on our nervous system and overall well-being.
Anna Janik, President of the Fiona Foundation, said in her speech: “Regardless of our neurotype, we can and want to grow. It's crucial to harness the resources that each of us possesses.”
Jacek Śmigiel, Head of the Tutor Team at asperIT.org, shared insights on how employers can create neurodiverse-friendly workplaces. He pointed to several key factors, including the environment—ensuring proper signage, lighting, color schemes, temperature, noise levels, quiet rooms, chillout spaces, stable workstations (with personal space)—and supporting individual work rhythms and paces. He also underscored the importance of organizational structure, social hierarchy, and the soft skills of leaders.
