From February to June 2025, seven first-year Master’s students from the Department of Design at the Magdalena Abakanowicz University of the Arts in Poznań worked on individual design concepts as part of the course "Design – Research Topic". The quality of the presented works matched that of seasoned designers — a fact clearly evident during the final prototype presentation held on May 29, 2025, at the university’s headquarters.
The task was to design accessories that would complement selected pieces of furniture from Balma’s portfolio, enhancing their comfort and functionality. The design process included a visit to Balma’s factory, consultations with experts, and an individual creative journey that culminated in the presentation of fully developed concepts.
This initiative is the result of a collaboration between academia and business, launched by a letter of intent signed in December last year between the university and the management board of Balma. Throughout the semester, the students were guided by faculty members from the Department of Design: Professor Marzena Wolińska, Dr. hab. Łukasz Stawarski, Dr. Bartosz Pawlak, and Jakub Garstkiewicz. Valuable insights were also provided by Balma’s technologists, as well as its production, marketing, and ESG teams.
The projects were met with great appreciation, and the company is already exploring their potential for commercialization.
We warmly congratulate all the students on their creativity and outstanding work. The collaboration between the University of the Arts in Poznań and Balma is a prime example of how the synergy between education and industry can lead to tangible benefits and a meaningful exchange of experience for both sides.
